LGBTQ+ Rights

Philosophy and Vision

We believe in the fundamental equality and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. LGBTQ+ rights are human rights, and every person should be free from discrimination, prejudice, and violence. Our vision is a society where LGBTQ+ individuals are fully protected under the law, celebrated for who they are, and have equal opportunities in all aspects of life, including employment, housing, healthcare, and family formation.

Issues, Causes, and Solutions

Despite significant progress, LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face discrimination, harassment, and violence. Legal protections are inconsistent across different states and localities, and systemic biases persist in various institutions. Transgender individuals, in particular, face high rates of discrimination and violence.

Solutions:

  • Pass the Equality Act: Enact comprehensive federal legislation that explicitly prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in areas such as employment, housing, public accommodations, education, and credit.
  • Strengthen Hate Crime Laws: Enhance federal and state hate crime laws to include sexual orientation and gender identity and ensure vigorous prosecution of crimes targeting the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Protect LGBTQ+ Youth: Implement policies and programs to protect LGBTQ+ youth from bullying, harassment, and discrimination in schools and other settings, and support initiatives that provide safe and affirming environments.
  • Ensure Equal Access to Healthcare: Prohibit discrimination in healthcare settings and ensure that LGBTQ+ individuals, including transgender individuals, have access to medically necessary and affirming care.
  • Support LGBTQ+ Families: Ensure equal rights and protections for LGBTQ+ families, including in areas such as marriage, adoption, and parental rights.
  • End Discrimination in the Military and Government: Ensure that LGBTQ+ individuals can serve openly and without discrimination in the military and all branches of government.
  • Address Violence Against Transgender Individuals: Implement targeted strategies to prevent violence against transgender individuals, particularly transgender women of color, and ensure that law enforcement is adequately trained to address these crimes.

Outcome

Protecting and advancing LGBTQ+ rights will create a more just, inclusive, and equitable society for all. It will reduce discrimination and violence, improve the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals, and ensure that they have equal opportunities to participate fully in civic and economic life. A nation that embraces and protects the rights of its LGBTQ+ citizens is stronger and more aligned with the principles of equality and justice.
